What is Advanced First Aid (OFA Level 3)?
Advanced First Aid (OFA Level 3), is the highest level of workplace first aid course designed and approved by WorkSafeBC. Upon successful completion of this course you will be given an Advanced First Aid certificate which will qualify you to work as a first aid attendant on a work site in British Columbia.
This course is designed for first aid attendants who are working remotely (more than 30 minutes from a hospital) and may need to secure a patient to a spine-board to prepare for transportation.
Initial certification requires full participation and course attendance, as well as satisfactory results in both a written and practical exam.
Do I need a Basic Level 1 or Intermediate Level 2 certificate before I take Advanced OFA Level 3?
No, there are no prerequisites for Advanced OFA Level 3. You can register for an Advanced First Aid course (Level 3 first aid course) with no previous first aid experience. That means that you do not need to take Basic OFA Level 1 or Intermediate OFA Level 2 before taking this course.
Does Advanced First Aid (OFA Level 3) include cpr training?
Yes, Advanced First Aid (OFA Level 3) includes adult CPR training and instruction on how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). In fact, every Vancouver First Aid course we offer includes CPR and AED training.
Can I do Advanced First Aid (OFA Level 3) online?
No, Level 3 First Aid is not currently offered as an online course. In-person instruction is essential to evaluating the skills of the first aid attendant therefore WorkSafeBC requires that Occupational First Aid Level 3 courses take place with a qualified instructor present.
How long is an Advanced First Aid (OFA Level 3) course?
Advanced First Aid, or OFA 3, is a 10 day course scheduled to take place over 2 typical work weeks. You will have 7 hours of training each day, as well as a 30 minute lunch break and two 15 minute coffee breaks.
At Fundamental First Aid we offer free water, coffee and tea and we have a fridge and microwave available if you want to bring your own lunch. There is also a great little diner within walking distance if you want to run out for some food during your break.
Is there a written exam in Advanced First Aid (Occupational First Aid Level 3)?
Yes, there are four multiple choice practice quizzes during the week and a 100 question multiple choice exam that you will complete at the end of your class. You have 120 minutes to complete the test, and you must get 70 of the questions correct in order to pass the course.
All of the questions on the written exam will have been asked on one of the four practice quizzes, therefore you will have time to study the material needed to pass the written exam ahead of time.
Does an Advanced First Aid (Level 3 First Aid) certificate expire?
Yes, the WorkSafeBC Advanced First Aid certificates expire 3 years after the date of certification.
How much should Advanced First Aid (level 3 first aid) cost?
The cost of an Occupational First Aid Level 3 course in the Vancouver area ranges from $850-950.
As you can see above, at Fundamental First Aid we charge $900 which is within the average price range.
However, there are other factors that you should consider when assessing the cost of the course, such as the cost of parking, whether or not you have to pay extra for a pocket mask or manual, and if there are any extra’s included.

How do I know if Advanced OFA Level 3 is the first aid certificate i need?
All employers in British Columbia who have more than 10 employees working at the same time are required to have a certified Occupational First Aid (OFA) attendant on site. The number of attendants, and the level of certification required by the attendants, is determined by 3 factors as outlined in Schedule 3-A of the WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation:
- Number of employees working at the same time
- Distance to the closest hospital (via ambulance)
- Risk of injury at the worksite (low risk, moderate risk, or high risk)
In order to determine whether your work site is low risk, moderate risk, or high risk, you will need to refer to the WorkSafeBC website to find your classification unit by clicking here.
Once you know your risk classification, click here to check Schedule 3-A to determine your minimum level of first aid. You may only need Level 1 or Level 2 first aid.
