OFA Level 1 Vancouver Course Overview

Occupational First Aid Level 1, now known as Basic First Aid, is the entry-level course recognized by WorkSafeBC for low-risk workplaces. It teaches essential life-saving skills and helps employers meet provincial workplace safety requirements.

By the end of the course, participants can identify hazards, respond effectively to common workplace injuries, and communicate clearly with emergency services.

This one-day class covers:

What to Expect in Class

At Fundamental First Aid, you spend much of the day practicing, moving, and working through realistic scenarios with your instructor.

Morning: Introduction to WorkSafeBC first aid standards, workplace responsibilities, and the Priority Action Approach.
Late Morning: Hands-on wound assessment and basic wound care practice.
Lunch Break: Bring lunch or visit nearby food options around Terminal Avenue, East Vancouver, and Mount Pleasant.
Afternoon: Choking scenarios, CPR/AED practice, group scenarios, and skill assessments.
Wrap-Up: Written test, debrief, and certificates printed on-site.

Basic First Aid / OFA Level 1 FAQs

What is OFA Level 1?

Occupational First Aid Level 1 is a basic workplace first aid course designed and approved by WorkSafeBC. After successful completion, you receive an OFA 1 certificate that qualifies you to work as a first aid attendant on a worksite in British Columbia.

Is this course WorkSafeBC approved?

Yes. Fundamental First Aid is a WorkSafeBC-approved emergency training school, and the OFA Level 1 course is designed by WorkSafeBC.

Do I need previous experience?

No. OFA Level 1 is an introductory first aid course and there are no prerequisites.

When will I get my certificate?

Official WorkSafeBC Basic First Aid certificates are handed out at the end of class. Certificates are valid for three years.

Can you train my team on-site?

Yes. We provide on-site workplace training across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Equipment and materials are included, and group pricing may be available.

What is the difference between OFA Level 1 and OFA Level 2?

OFA Level 1 is a one-day course for first aid attendants working with a smaller number of coworkers or on lower-risk worksites. OFA Level 2 is a longer course for higher-risk worksites or workplaces with larger numbers of workers.

Is OFA Level 1 equivalent to CPR-C?

No. CPR-C refers to CPR techniques for adults, children, and infants. OFA Level 1 is designed for workplace first aid attendants and generally focuses on adult CPR.

Is OFA Level 1 the same as Standard First Aid?

No. Standard First Aid is a two-day course and covers several topics not included in OFA Level 1, such as child and infant CPR, slings and splints, environmental illnesses, and poisons.

Can I do OFA 1 online?

No. This course is not offered online because in-person instruction is required to evaluate first aid attendant skills.

How long is a first aid level 1 course?

The course is scheduled over a typical workday and includes training time, a lunch break, and short coffee breaks.

Is there a written exam?

Yes. There is a 25-question multiple-choice exam at the end of class. You have 30 minutes to complete the test and must answer at least 18 questions correctly to pass.
