What is OFA Level 2?
Occupational First Aid Level 2 is a 16-hour training program that bridges the gap between the entry-level OFA Level 1 course and the advanced OFA Level 3 certification. It is designed for designated workplace first aid attendants at moderate-sized or high-risk worksites.
This course teaches students how to handle major injuries, illnesses, and medical emergencies that go beyond basic first aid care. The training focuses on patient assessment, airway management, shock treatment, and wound care, all following WorkSafeBC standards.
Key details:
Course length: Approximately 16 hours (usually 2 classroom days)
Certification: WorkSafeBC Intermediate First Aid (Occupational First Aid Level 2) Certificate
Certification valid for: 3 years
Prerequisites: None (students must be at least 16 years old)
Examination: 66 question written test conducted by your WorkSafeBC instructor
Upon completion, you will be fully qualified to act as the designated OFA Level 2 attendant at your workplace.
Who Needs OFA Level 2 Training?
OFA Level 2 is intended for workers and supervisors in medium-sized or high-risk workplaces as defined by WorkSafeBC. This includes job sites where injuries are more likely to occur or where quick access to medical facilities may not always be possible.
Common industries and roles that require or benefit from OFA Level 2 certification include:
Construction and demolition workers
Manufacturing and industrial employees
Commercial and warehouse operations
Electrical and utility workers
Film production safety staff
Site supervisors and foremen
Safety officers on smaller or mid-sized worksites
Many employers prefer to have multiple workers certified at this level to improve overall site safety and meet regulatory requirements.
What You’ll Learn in OFA Level 2
The OFA Level 2 course provides an in-depth understanding of how to manage serious injuries and illnesses in a workplace setting. You will develop the skills needed to assess, treat, and monitor patients until emergency medical services arrive or until the worker can be transported for further care.
Topics Covered Include:
Scene assessment and hazard control
Primary and secondary patient surveys
Airway management and artificial respiration
CPR for adults
Control of severe bleeding and shock
Fracture and soft tissue injury management
Spinal injury recognition and immobilization
Treatment for burns, eye injuries, and medical conditions
- Record keeping and communication procedures
Each class includes both theory and hands-on practice using professional first aid equipment. Students participate in simulated workplace emergencies to gain the confidence and speed required to act effectively under pressure.
The Difference Between OFA Level 1, 2, and 3
Choosing the right level of first aid training depends on the size and risk level of your worksite.
OFA Level 1: A one-day introductory course suitable for low-risk workplaces or small teams.
OFA Level 2: A two-day course for medium to high-risk worksites, offering more advanced assessment and injury management.
OFA Level 3: A two-week advanced course designed for large or remote worksites with significant hazards and limited access to emergency care.
If you are unsure which level is required for your workplace, our instructors can help you interpret the WorkSafeBC First Aid Regulation and determine the right course for your specific work environment.

Why OFA Level 2 Certification Matters
Every year, thousands of workers in British Columbia suffer workplace injuries that require immediate first aid before professional medical help arrives. Having trained OFA Level 2 attendants on site saves lives and prevents minor injuries from becoming major ones.
Employers benefit too. WorkSafeBC regulations require certain workplaces to have certified first aid attendants based on risk classification, crew size, and distance to medical care. By maintaining staff with valid OFA Level 2 certification, you not only meet legal requirements but also create a safer, more prepared work environment.

All employers in British Columbia who have more than 10 employees working at the same time are required to have a certified Occupational First Aid (OFA) attendant on site. The number of attendants, and the level of certification required by the attendants, is determined by 3 factors as outlined in Schedule 3-A of the WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation:
- Number of employees working at the same time
- Distance to the closest hospital (via ambulance)
- Risk of injury at the worksite (low risk, moderate risk, or high risk)
In order to determine whether your work site is low risk, moderate risk, or high risk, you will need to refer to the WorkSafeBC website to find your classification unit by clicking here.
Once you know your risk classification, click here to check Schedule 3-A to determine your minimum level of first aid.
