What is the Transportation Endorsement Course?

The Transportation Endorsement course is a WorkSafeBC-approved add-on certification that teaches first aid attendants how to safely package, move, and transport an injured or ill worker.

The goal is to prevent further injury during transport and ensure the worker reaches medical care as safely as possible.

This is not a standalone first aid course. To take TE, students must already hold a valid:

  • OFA Level 1 certificate, or
  • OFA Level 2 certificate

Students taking OFA Level 3 do not need a separate Transportation Endorsement, because transportation procedures are already included in that program.

Who Needs Transportation Endorsement in Surrey?

You may need a Transportation Endorsement in Surrey if you are an OFA Level 1 or OFA Level 2 attendant working at a site where:

  • the workplace is more than 30 minutes from an ambulance station, or
  • the jobsite includes less-accessible areas where emergency response may be delayed

Even in Surrey and other urban areas, some large industrial properties, construction projects, utility corridors, and worksites with restricted access can fall into this category.

Industries where TE is commonly required include:

  • Construction and demolition
  • Road and bridge work
  • Excavation and civil infrastructure
  • Manufacturing and industrial facilities
  • Resource and utility projects
  • Outdoor worksites and remote operations

For many employers, ensuring attendants have the proper certification is a key part of complying with workplace first aid requirements.

What You’ll Learn

Students in the TE course learn how to safely package, lift, monitor, and transport injured workers without causing further harm.

Core topics include:

  • Scene assessment before transport
  • Communication and teamwork during patient movement
  • Hazard control during transport
  • Safe lifting techniques
  • One-person and two-person carries
  • Spinal motion restriction
  • Securing patients to transport equipment
  • Use of stretchers, spine boards, and straps
  • Loading and unloading patients
  • Monitoring and caring for patients during transport
  • Documentation and legal responsibilities

The emphasis is on proper body mechanics, patient safety, and real-world application.

Why the Transportation Endorsement Matters

When emergency medical services are delayed, first aid attendants may need to safely move a worker to get them the care they need. In these situations, improper handling can make injuries worse.

That is why Transportation Endorsement training is so important. It helps attendants:

  • move injured workers safely
  • reduce the risk of secondary injury
  • use transport equipment correctly
  • comply with WorkSafeBC first aid requirements
  • respond more effectively in remote or difficult jobsite environments

For employers, having TE-certified staff helps reduce risk and strengthens workplace safety readiness.
